25 Years Strong: The History of Shear Enterprises

From New Orleans to 35 million Ahh Bras — the full story of how Rhonda Shear founded Shear Enterprises, launched the first infomercial, and built 25 years on HSN by proving a simple premise: comfort doesn't require compromise.

By Rhonda Shear  ·  Founder, Shear Enterprises · Updated 2026

In the early 2000s, Rhonda Shear — then already a decade into careers in comedy, modeling, and television — launched Shear Enterprises with a product based on a premise the lingerie industry had largely ignored: that the most comfortable bra would be one with no underwire, no rigid cups, and no back clasp, sized by clothing size from XS through 5X, at the same price at every size.

Twenty-five years later, 35 million units later, and across a quarter-century of consistent presence on HSN, the premise hasn't changed. Here's the full story of how it began.

I knew what I was making when I designed the Ahh Bra. I knew it was right. I'd been looking for a bra like it myself for years, and I couldn't find one, so I made it. Twenty-five years of selling 35 million of them didn't surprise me — it confirmed what I already believed: women know when something genuinely works, and they don't forget it.

The History of Shear Enterprises: Milestone by Milestone

New Orleans · Early Life
Where It Started
Rhonda Shear was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana — a city with its own distinct relationship to fashion, celebration, and self-expression. Her early path through the entertainment industry began with her career in comedy and modeling, which would eventually bring her the industry insight, audience relationship, and communication skills that made Shear Enterprises possible.
Early 2000s
Founding Shear Enterprises and the Original Ahh Bra
Rhonda founded Shear Enterprises with a specific product vision: a bra that was genuinely comfortable — wire-free, seamless, pull-over, sized by clothing size. The Original Ahh Bra's formula (96% nylon / 4% spandex, 4-way stretch, no rigid construction) was designed to support breast weight through fabric recovery rather than metal and structured cups. The premise was that comfort and support weren't opposites — the industry had just never properly optimized for both simultaneously.
2009
The First Infomercial — Taking the Product National
In 2009, Rhonda launched Shear Enterprises' first infomercial — a direct-to-consumer format that let her demonstrate the Ahh Bra's fit, construction, and comfort to a national audience in her own voice. The infomercial worked because Rhonda's communication style was genuinely different from most intimate apparel marketing: personal, practical, specific, and honest about what the product did and didn't do. Women responded. The brand grew rapidly from there.
25+ Years
HSN and a 25-Year Relationship with an Audience
Rhonda's presence on HSN across 25+ years is remarkable in the direct-to-consumer retail landscape. The longevity comes from a consistent product commitment (the Ahh Bra's formula hasn't changed), genuine connection with an audience (the HSN viewer relationship is built on trust and direct communication), and a product line that continued to expand — panties, lingerie, shapewear, leakproof — without losing the original focus on comfort and inclusive sizing.
Today · 2026
35 Million Units and Counting
Shear Enterprises today sells across rhondashear.com, HSN, and retail partners — bras, panties, leakproof styles, lingerie, shapewear, and loungewear, all in the same extended sizing and at the same consistent price regardless of size. The Ahh Bra remains the bestseller, unchanged in its core formula. The collection has grown, but the premise hasn't: comfort is not a compromise — it's the entire point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shear Enterprises was founded by Rhonda Shear in the early 2000s with the launch of the Original Ahh Bra. The company's first national infomercial launched in 2009, which drove rapid growth and established the HSN relationship that has continued for more than 25 years.

More than 25 years. Rhonda Shear's presence on HSN across a quarter century is notable in the direct-to-consumer retail landscape — built on a consistent product (the Ahh Bra formula hasn't changed), genuine connection with an audience developed through her television career, and a commitment to inclusive sizing that resonated with HSN's broad national viewership.

The product was right. A 96% nylon / 4% spandex wire-free seamless bra, sized by clothing size (XS–5X), at $25 at every size — the premise being that comfort and support weren't opposites, just that no one had properly optimized for both. The industry assumed wire was required for support. Rhonda disagreed and proved it with a better formula. 35 million units sold validated the premise.
